Nowadays, olive groves cover about ΒΌ of the total area of the island dominating its natural environment and creating employment for almost the entire local agricultural population. Among the Olive trees of Crete, exist some which can be characterized as "Monumental". One of them is the Monumental Olive Tree of Kavousi.

Ancient Olive Tree of Kavoussi Village

This impressive olive tree is located 3 km away from Kavousi village and worths a visit. The dimensions of the tree trunk measured at height of 0.8m. and mainly its largest diameter (4,90m.) and its perimeter (14,20 m.) allow a rough estimation of its age at about 3250 years.

This estimated age marks the first appearance of the tree in the Post-Palatial Minoan Period of the Cretan history (1350-1100 BC).

Once you decide to visit it, you can combine it with a visit to the Late Minoan Settlement of Azorias, you can also hike the Havgas easy gorge or Mesonas gorge, or just relax at the nearby Tholos beach, just a quarter away from the Monumental Olive Tree.

Cretan Zelkova Abelicea blog/cretan-zelkova-abelicea Fri, 25 Aug 2017 00:00:00 +0000 A few days ago we hosted two researchers in our Hotel which represented Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICH). They visited Kritsa in order to find, register and protect the trees named Zelkova Abelicea, on the plateau of Katharo.

Cretan zelkova (or Anegnoro or Ampelitsa) is an endemic bush or small tree of Crete as high as 3-5 meters. It constitutes a unique species of the genre Zelkova, of the family Ulmaceae and is characterized as a living fossil.

Its leaves are about 2,5 centimeters, oval with 7-9 teeth. It has small, white and aromatic flowers. Its drupe is silk cotton. It grows in the mountainous zone from 850 to 1800 meters, in all main Mountainous Ranges of Crete.

Though the species was threatened by urbanization (habitat loss), overgrazing and wildfires, recent fieldwork seems to show that Zelkova abelicea is becoming more abundant. It is not threatened with extinction, though remains vulnerable.
